Before you leave the car
Layers & footwear
Quick-dry base, wind shell, traction for rooty or muddy sections
Water & snacks
More than you think on humid summer days
Tick prevention
Permethrin-treated socks or gaiters, light colors, post-hike full-body check
Hunter orange
Hat or vest during hunting seasons — check MassWildlife calendar before you go
Offline map
Download trail or enable offline pack before you lose cell signal
Headlamp
Even for short loops — daylight is shorter than you expect in fall and spring
Tell someone
Leave your trailhead and return time with someone who isn't going
First-aid basics
Small kit, whistle, and any personal medications
Seasonal hazards
Ice and mud on north-facing slopes; snowshoes helpful after storms
Peak tick season — deer ticks most active; vernal pool closures possible; turkey season late Apr–May
Humidity; mosquitoes near wetlands; carry extra water; afternoon thunderstorms
Hunting seasons — wear orange; second tick peak (Oct); leaves hide roots and wet rocks
Identification apps
Install before you lose signal. Use results as a hypothesis — confirm with a local expert before acting on anything that matters (edibility, rare species, allergies).
Seek by iNaturalist
Point your camera at living things for on-trail suggestions. Good for narrowing possibilities; treat IDs as a starting point, not a permit to pick or disturb.
Merlin Bird ID
Photo and sound ID from Cornell Lab. Sound ID works Shazam-style for birdsong — hold still and minimize wind noise for best results.
PlantNet
Image-based plant ID with a large herbarium backbone. Upload multiple plant parts (leaf, flower, fruit) when possible to improve accuracy.
